What is Pedals for Pencils?

Pedals for Pencils is a grassroots fundraising and advocacy effort led by Tennessee educators to equip classrooms and defend every child’s right to a free public education. As Senate Bill 836 threatens to undermine that right, we are cycling across Vermont to raise awareness, build solidarity, and fund vital classroom needs. All donations support our students directly and strengthen the broader fight for equitable, inclusive education for all.

What is Senate Bill 0836?

Tennessee state legislation that would let public school districts deny enrollment to undocumented children or charge them tuition, something that’s unconstitutional, unethical, and deeply dangerous. We’re not letting it happen quietly.

Rooted in Community

Pedals for Pencils is proud to support and be supported by these incredible local partners, who stand with us in the fight to defend public education.

SORBA Chattanooga builds and maintains over 160 miles of sustainable mountain biking trails, expanding access to outdoor spaces and connecting communities through recreation. Their work fosters social connection, physical well-being, and environmental stewardship. All of these values align with our vision for inclusive, thriving public spaces.

They’ve supported Pedals for Pencils by donating gear for our ride, standing with us in the belief that strong communities begin with access: on trails, in classrooms, and everywhere in between.

La Paz is Chattanooga’s leading organization supporting Latino families through advocacy, education, and culturally responsive services. Their work strengthens communities by ensuring immigrant voices are included and empowered.

We’re proud to direct $1,500 of our campaign funds to La Paz, an investment in the shared belief that every family deserves dignity, safety, and access to opportunity, no matter where they’re from.

TIRRC is a statewide powerhouse for immigrant and refugee advocacy, leading campaigns that protect and uplift communities across Tennessee. Their tireless organizing was instrumental in pausing Senate Bill 0836, a critical step in defending every child’s right to education.

Pedals for Pencils is proud to contribute $1,500 to support TIRRC’s ongoing work. Together, we’re sending a clear message: Tennessee’s public schools must remain open to all, regardless of immigration status.

The destruction of our schools does not start and end in Tennessee. are you ready to help?
